The Institute
The Oxford Taiji Gongfu Institute was original found as Oxford Chen Style Tai Chi Club by Shifu Lei in 2004 and emerged with Oxford Warrior Wush (Shaolin School) in July 2005.
In September 2005, Grandmaster Gou, one of the most famous Chen Style Tai Chi Masters was invited to be the headteacher, and the title of the school has been firmed as “Oxford Taiji Gongfu Institute” (OTGI).
We are not only teaching Chinese Kung Fu but also create our own unique Chinese Kung Fu Demonstration Team “Flying Dragon Demo Team”, which are combined our instructors and the best students in our institute. Only half year, they reach a enormous achievement and present for our school to attend a number of events, for example, Chinese New Year Party in Town Hall, SIMEN’s new Chinese factory open ceremony, Oxford National Health Trust Conference and Cowley Carnival, etc. On 11th April 2006, we are successfully organized our own “Tai Chi Masters Kung Fu Show”. Flying Dragon team members also dedicate to attend national and international competition, for example we have won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Brown medals in the 18th British Open Tai Chi Competition.
What we Teach
Taiji
Taiji (or Tai Chi) is a set of moving meditation exercise. It incorporates slow, fluid movements with rhythmic breathing patterns, designed to put you in harmony with nature. Taiji was created by the Chen family in a small village in Henan province China. Today Taiji is becoming a very popular modern exercise, practiced by millions of people all over the world.
Chen Style Taiji
Chen style Taiji was created by Chen Wang Ting in the seventeenth century, and is the oldest of all the Taiji styles. The principle of Chen Style Taiji is the pair concept: keeping balance of Yin and Yang, soft and rigid, fast and slow, with a magic method of twining force called Silk-Reeling.
Shaolin Kung Fu
Shaolin Kung Fu is the origin of Chinese Martial Art. Shaolin kungfu has a vast content and numerous forms. There are some important aspects of gong fu such as: internal kungfu, external kungfu, hard kungfu, light kungfu, qi gong, etc. The internal kungfu mainly focuses on practicing the strength of one's body; the light kungfu focuses on the jump especially; qi gong includes practise and maintenance of qi. Shaolin Gongfu includes hand-to-hand defense as well as the use of weapons. There are forms: staff, spear, broadsword, straight sword, various other weapons, combat, equipments, performance sparring, sparring with weapons, etc.
